Blue Tree Monitor

Rare

Varanus macraei is an arboreal monitor lizard with a striking blue body covered in black spots. Active and agile, it stands out for its unique appearance and fascinating behaviour.

General Characteristics

Varanus macraei, also known as the blue tree monitor, is one of the most visually impressive monitors, with a brilliant blue body covered in black spots.

It is endemic to Batanta Island in the Raja Ampat archipelago, where it inhabits dense, humid forests.

Arboreal and diurnal, it spends most of its time climbing, moving and hunting in the canopy.

In captivity, it requires a spacious vertical terrarium, high temperatures (up to 40–45 °C at the basking spot) and around 75% humidity.

Active and sometimes wary, it needs patience but adapts well when its needs are respected.
