Varanus primordius is a small terrestrial Australian monitor, discreet and agile, living in the wooded regions of the Northern Territory.


General Characteristics

Varanus primordius belongs to the subgenus Odatria, which includes the dwarf monitors of Australia. It is one of the smallest known monitors, with a total length not exceeding 25 cm. Its natural habitat includes open forests and sandy areas of the Northern Territory, where it shelters under rocks or in shallow burrows.This species is strictly insectivorous, feeding on a variety of arthropods.In captivity, it is essential to recreate an environment close to its natural habitat, with high temperatures, moderate humidity and plenty of suitable hiding places. Due to its shy nature, it should be maintained with minimal stress.
